John Husted, MD

Dr. John Husted is an established and highly skilled physician with more than 30 years of experience in general surgery and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Husted is a graduate of University of California, Santa Cruz. He obtained his medical degree and core surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Arizona. Dr. Husted draws from a wide breadth of diverse practice experience, from major urban and exurban environments to agricultural and other medically underserved rural communities.

He is well regarded, serving as the Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine from 2015 to 2017 and having lectured and precepted for numerous other training programs and professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons. His work has been featured on the DiscoveryHealth Channel, BBC-4, and the Dr. Oz Show.

John has always wanted to be a doctor. “My father was a doctor, and so was his father, so becoming a doctor just seemed the natural thing to do,” he says. When asked why he choose General Surgery as his specialty he said, “Surgery seemed relatively natural for me. I believe that doctors should choose the specialty that seems the easiest to them because whatever seems easiest is probably something that you’re good at, and something that you will be more effective at in serving humanity.”

Dr. Husted believes listening to the patient is critical. “If a physician listens to the patient long enough, many times the patient will tell you the diagnosis.” His patients praise his ability to explain things in a way that is understandable. “I’ve been told that I can ‘dumb things down’ without making my patients feel like a dummy.” Referring physicians appreciate his unique training, distinctive services, communication skills, and willingness to see referrals the same day.

John enjoys nature hiking, cultural activities, studying the history of human thought and admiring architecture. He is happy to be in Barstow, living in the desert. “It is a dream come true for me,” he says.
